Could be a tranny or rear end breaker if built properly. Other than that like TvLynn said.

Cost depends on what you have to pay for a 340 motor, Or are you planning to rebuild one ??

I dunno, is the 318 the Poly or the LA? THAT will make a great difference in the cost of your swap..

I dont know if i would buy a 340 already built, or buy one to rebuild. I would just try to get the cheapest one.
I have a friend that might be able to get me a good deal with an engine, but he said dont depend on him.
I have a 318 LA in my car and it is rusted through. I wanted an engine with a little more power without doing a big change with everything.

Chris don't discount 360's which are probably a lot easier to find, and less expensive.

The only real difference between the 340/ 360 is,

You need a 360 specific pan, because the rear seal area is different. You'll need a "car" or front/ center sump pan, as opposed to a van/ pickup rear sump pan.

You'll need to deal with balance between the 318/ 360 converter. The original 360's had weights welded to the front face of the converter. You can buy aftermarket (like B*M) special flex plates that are weighted so you can use 318 (neutral balance) converters.

The engine mount ears are different, but there are brackets available. I actually modified my original 67 273 brackets in my Dart to fit a 360. My 360 came with van brackets, which are very deep. I simply forced the van bracket over the top of the Dart bracket to locate the holes. Drilled one more hole in the pass. side, and welded a simple strap to the other side.

Does a 360 use more gas than a 340?
