96 Dodge Dakota keeps shuting off.
V6 Mag.MPI. 3.9.
At first we thought it was out of gas. At times it wouldn't start.
After a little time it would then start. And run for a few days. Then do it again.
Now it only runs a few minutes, shuts off like turning the key off. Let it sit 10mins. Then it starts.
We replaced coil, crank sensor. No change. Anyone have any ideas ? Thanks

Fuel Filter is not 1/2 plugged is it????
Anyway.... Fuel pressure check is where I would start.... Might need a throttle plate cleaning...
Also check the charging system... They seem to do funny things to these Dodges....
Just mt 2 cents...

I think the dang thang has the pump and whatever filter there is inside the tank.
Throttle plate, not sure where that is? He had the pressure checked but it was doing better then plus seems if the pressure was to go down it's when it won't start. Right? Just trying to check as much as we can before getting into the tank deal. He helps with the car & good friend So I am trying to help him out. Also will check charging & pressure again. Thanks......

We hooked up fuel pressure check gage , while engine is running the gage is erratic between 45/55 shut the truck off and turn key to run ,pressure comes right up and then while key is in run position
The pressure starts leaking off in about a minute all the way to zero.
Turn key off then back on the pressure comes right back then as always it leaks off very quick....thanks

Ok, just to clarify that the fuel pressure can drop to zero with key on (power going to pump) motor not running.
& still be usable. The f/p gage had a bleed off but we didn't' need it because it lost pressure so fast.
We may need to get someone to check the codes. If it will run to get there to check these sensors.
Yesterday we started & ran down hill coasting stopped put it in reverse & it died. We cleaned around t/b some ,where is the throttle plate located? Thanks, Al

Fuel only runs about 3 seconds... Its on a relay controlled by the PCM "Power Control Module"....
Throttle plate it just behind the black air intake boot/duct. careful when cleaning...
I would find someone with a scan tool... Other than that. It's just a crap shoot of throwing parts at it sometimes....

Weird acting , It runs good while under power & at idle but when you stop & put it intoreverse it dies, Seems it does this after a little idle time. Like coasting to a stop. Hard thing to figure. We Wil take it back to auto parts store maybe now after some things being replaced it will show different codes. Last time they said coil ,replaced. Then maybe a sensor on the trans. Replaced. Then the idle thing sensor, replaced. Lol.

Didn't' really remember the shutter, maybe a little though. Will check it out more. Soon as we can going to get a scanner on it...also the check engine light is not on. Been insulting the garage. Cold ! Lol. Kerosene $4.35..... Have to seal it to warm it......Done for the season. Have a lot to do to the Duster before spring. Upgrade brakes , shoes to disk rears. Not sure on fronts yet.
Putting a floor mounted brake pedal & master cylinder to get it off the firewall.
Going to be tight. New lines. Hopefully a few more goodies.

Keep us up to speed on the Dakota.....
Nice here 90* today and going to be a Low of 60*...
Good Winter projects for the off season for the duster...
Dont forget to go out and spin the motor over about every 4 weeks or so..

Yep, the Dakota has to get fixed. We are kinda stalled until we get a positive I'd on the problem.
I am also looking at the converter possibly stopped up. Had that happen before . I read a few posts before where it turns out it was totally something else causing the problem which they reported but neglected to report what fixed it. Al

Not reporting back... That sucks when that happens...
Dose not sound like a converter from what you described? But you never know...
Check it... Drill a small hole in the header pipe and stick a pressure gauge up in it with the plastic tip and see what the pressure is at idle and off idle. Stick a small screw back in the hold and go check the back pressure spec....
Check engine light not on. is the part that bugs me...

Yes the check engine light has remained off. Haven't been able to get the truck on a scanner yet ,things have slowed here.. 17 here this morning. Hopefully I have everything ready for this cold.
We are going to get it checked soon.

Turns out the truck had a bad worn timing chain . Then broken motor mount.
Then found a bad electronic connection, there is a box on pass. side fender well has like 4 plugs going into the side one of the plastic plugs ears had been chewed off. . Doing great now I'm getting back to the Duster.
