Buying a Jeep

OK guys, I know it's been a while since I've been in here and that this is a MOPAR forum but...
I'm looking at buying a 1985 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler this weekend and could use some pointers on what to look for when I check it out. Here's what I do know: A new 258 c.i. long block was installed 2 years ago and there's only 3k miles on it. Along with the engine it has a new water pump, fuel pump, alternator and carbeurator (Holley 4-bbl), clutch and pressure plate. it's also got new universals and steering box brace. The chassis itself has 97k. The guy mentioned there has been a little rust repaired with fiberglass and that is something I'll be looking at closest. The price is $5,500 firm. What do you think?

Dana 30 front axle, amc 20 rear axle probably. See if the motor is a "jasper" motor (remanned in the USA). The 4 barrel is a bit large for a 258 unless it's the 370cfm(?) size.

You'll want to look closely at the frame as ther eare times that rust can be hiding. The bodys are known to be a little rusty due to age but there are plenty of repair panels out there along with fiberglass tubs.

It's hard to tell from that pic but I don't think it's worth $5500. I'd start at maybe $3000-$3500 depending on how it runs, drives and stops.

The scrambler is in kind of high demand among the rock crawlers because of it's longer wheel base (less likely to tumble end-over-ends like the regular Jeeps).

Strangely enough I have never owned an old Jeep, my last Jeep was a Rubicon which I bought new in 2005. I really wish I still had it.

Anyway, if it's worth $5500 to you, you should go ahead and get it. I remember passing on a '70 Hemi 'cuda because I thought it wasn't worth the $6000 the owner was asking...

realy check the frame rails at the transision over the rear axle thats a common rust spot. Also check the spring perches front and rear they sometimes collapse. heres a pick of mine before and after.
