I just bought a new set of plug wires for my 383. Five of the plug-end boots are 90° and three are straight boots. This doesn't seem correct to me.

Are the wires specific for the 383 and with what type of headers/exhaust manifolds?
Where did you get the wires and who made them?

I've never heard of that, but that would be an optimal configuration for my 440 with Hooker headers.
Actually, 5 90* and 3 135* would be optimal, but I digress...

Well on the plug wires, 383's do use a heat shield and use a few straights and a couple 90* as far as I remember on my old 383's.

These wires are supposed to fit my stock 1969 big block, 383 specific.
I purchased the set at CarQuest.

I posted a picture in the gallery section of our Mopar Forums site. Just seems odd to me.
The worn-out set that's on the motor now are exclusively 90° boots.

The Ghost just had a deep tune-up and a new master cylinder installed. Enjoyed a 70 mile cruise on Sunday without any trouble. Hur-ray!

So you think I should install this new set of plug wires? I see what you say regarding the heat shields. Interested in your thoughts.

People break their necks looking when I cruise past. It's not a Charger or a Challenger or a Cuda. It doesn't have a Hemi and it will never run 9's.
It's just a neat old boat in great condition and I love being the Captain!

Ok, that explains a lot. Also the old wires ARE orange with Mopar lettering. Apparently "wrong" like that other forum post suggests.

My Mopar guru buddy and I gave "The Ghost" a long overdue tune up on Saturday. Cranked in about 12° of timing and the 383 is running like a Swiss watch. I can hear all 8 pistons popping and my gas mileage has improved. I couldn't believe how burned my points were. It's a wonder the motor ran at all...

Tune-up continued...
The old plugs looked pretty good, light grey but old Champions. I installed Autolite #86's. Old plugs had been in there so many years they had rust on them!

I've made an appointment with a local auto and truck electrical shop. They've been in business since 1976, not parts changers but real gray-haired mechanics! I'm tired of chasing gremlins with my weak charging system.

I bought this car to drive the wheels off of, many over-the-horizon trips. Fear of my Amp gauge always diving towards discharge has kept me from driving after dark. The charging system has worked better sometimes than others but it's never been rock solid. At this point I'm willing to pay to play...

Those spooky headlights are by design. I dig the halo headlights that are so popular but who wants to be like everyone else?

I got the idea from the old VW Beetle headlight buckets. They had this little bulb in the bottom of the bucket that only lit-up the lenses when the courtesy lights were on.

I used tiny spike LED motorcycle license plate lights in my bezels to light up my headlight lenses!

Those gray-haired mechanics came through for me! I simply can't believe that my charging system is working.

That first whiz-bang auto electric shop didn't do a very good job on my round back alternator. The windings were shorting, the stator had a loose wire and there were some needle bearings missing on the rear shaft. Also, my voltage regulator wasn't working.

Now, standing on the brakes with the high beams AND air conditioning on, the amp gauge lays just to the discharge side of center at idle. Feed in some RPM's and that needle swings deep into the charge side and settles nicely on the good side of center. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL THING!

So at long last my giant Mopar is actually charging the battery as I motor down the road. I'm so freaking happy I'm delearious and I've lost bladder control. The Ghost can be driven over the horizon and I won't have to constantly watch the dad-burn amp gauge. "That's cool as dang-it".

So if your charging system isn't doing the job, find a good shop with gray-haired mechanics and pay the man. Confidence can be purchased for less than $250.00.
