How 'bout a 64' factory lightweight A-990 car? It certainly wasn't meant for the streets, but was in fact street legal from the factory unlike the superstock darts and cudas.

1969 Charger Daytons
There is no doubt about this one. The fastest car was the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that was clocked at well over 200 mph - and it was stock except for the tires when they did this. Unfortunately, on the "quick" question, the Daytona Charger was a real dog. It was built for top end and couldn't beat a Volkswagen off the line in a quarter mile. OK, actually it could beat a Volkswagen off the line, but just about everything else could beat it!

The 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 was considered the "fastest" car of the 1970s, but in terms of top speed it would be the Daytona and Superbird. However............
The 1963 Pontiac Tempest Super Duty came with a 421 rated at 405 hp, but with 12:1 compression out of the factory it was more like 500 hp. These cars were predicted to run mid 11s in the 1/4. They were production cars, but extremely low production

ok there are a few vw bugs that can run the quater mile fairly quick. i have seen a few take a viper in the quater. 300hp in a car that weighs around 2100 lbs = fast.

Lol hate to twist the tables here, but.... Whats with the GTO being called the first muscle car what about all the old ram chargers and 300C that came with the hemi. That stupid show to dream car garage did a test to chevy against mopar i believe and the chevy came out on top because the challenger they were using had a bad clutch another group of guys that favor chevy.

Ya know, most cars are just about one-good-tuneup from beating most any other car. Few years back I had a built 86 Z28, 5-speed and went against this 71 454 ss chevelle auto. The start was good for both. I beat him the whole way....TWICE! Then I found out my A/C was still on! HaHa! Anyway, there was NO way I should have beat him that easily, if at all! We talked afterwards, and found it all came down to just simple, FREE, tuning.

I know it is fun to read about our favorite cars supplied by the manufacturers and run by the popular magazines, then written up for the stories, but in 1962 Studebaker ran the Avanti at Bonneville to an official certified stock 168.15 MPH for 1 mile. It also ran 163.90 for the 10 mile record. Those are 2-way runs. The Avanti was the fastest car in the world at the time. I read that that record for U.S. built cars wasn't broken until the early '70's when one of the NASCAR (then illegal) winged cars ran something like 220. We know those racers weren't stock cars you could drive home from the dealer.
That Avanti still exists in its original unrestored form and is shown at different venues. It does have a roll cage built into it and some extra gauges but you could have gone to the dealership and ordered one with the same drive train. 7 people did.

On the street back in the mid 70s you would race any thing with a 4 speed, tires were junk and drivers were Idiots quick to go up in smoke and shift. As far as high speed who cared, the super bird that went 220 is on YouTube and far from stock, its more stock car. I think Bobby Isaak drove it.

The 302 Z/28 wasn’t that fast in quarter. Which it wasn’t made to be.
Hey guys I was just wondering what was the fastest car in the late 60's early 70's? If we can put our biased sides to rest and answer this honestly. Also what was the quickest? Fastest being highway top speed, quickest being a quarter mile car.
I know these were considered the baddest on the street:
426 hemi cuda
440 six pack cuda
SS 396 Chevelle
ZL1 camaro
69 Z28 camaro come with a chevy 302...yes chevy made a wicked bad 302 that was from what I have heard capable of turning about 8k to 9k rpms all day long. They came with headers in the trunk.
Or would it have been a 69 SS 396 Camaro?
429 cobra jett shelby cobra
I know the z28 302 camaro would probably whoop any of those on the highway, I have heard they are scary as hell and never shut down on the highway.
