well did you replace the cam and lifters?
if yes, you used molly lube right?
the motor has to run at around 2000 rpm for 20 minutes
then shut the motor off and drain the oil(let the car cool for a bit)

Is it really that simple? We completely rebuilt it. Cam crank rods bearings pistons etc.

the 2000 rpm is the recomended way, i just start them at let them idle as normal, and never had a problem with cam break in, shut it down 20 30 minutes after, let it cool then drain the oil, re torque the exaust manifold bolts, intake, water pump, head bolts if you dont use perma torque type gasgets. then i drive them esay for around 800~1000 miles then give them hell, everyone has their own way, if it works for them then it all good.

edit: where at in washington are you?

After you drain the oil....... don't forget to put new oil in along with a new filter.

I'm a big believer in synthetic motor oil. Can you break it in with conventional oil and then put in synthetic?

I know for a fact that the FJS (full size jeep i.e. j10, Grand Wagoneer, etc) community uses diesel oil in their motors after rebuilding them because of the amount of zinc. Doesn't effect those motors at all.

yes
the break in is the most important part
after that, do whatever you normally do
