timing questions

Hey guys i just have a few questions about timing my car. As it drives right now its just "timed" by ear and well... not exactly accurate. As for motor its a 68 440 with a stock rebuild .03 over so im assuming its 10.1 compression ratio. i have a Holley 750 double pumper on top of a performer RPM air gap intake manifold, Pertronix electronic ignition, and headman long tubes going to 2.5 inch duals w/ 3 inch Flowtech Afterburners dumping before the rear axle. The cam and heads should be stock Magnum stuff. My two main questions would be how do i find the 0 degree position? The marks are not visible on the front of the engine... i think i can use TDC (top dead center) of cylinder 1 to do this but im not sure if thats what determines it. My second concern is im not too sure what the advance should be on a 440. I have a buddy thats going to time the car for me Sunday so he will show me most of what i need to know to do it myself next time but he is a chevy guy and is not too sure what he should set the timing at either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Try 36 degrees at 2000 and go from there.
