408 stroker build questions
Hey guys I'm building a stroker 408 for my truck and was at a local swap meet and saw some j heads with 2.02 intake valves and it has valve springs for 650 lift cam not sure on what brand valves or if it has 3 angle valve job and has Harland sharp roller rockers 1.5 ratio guy raced it then in a dart that ran 10's he only had 300 passes bolt on ready he's asking 850 was wondering if it is worth it? With my build I am wanting to run 10.5:1 compression bottom end had eagle rods windage tray and arp bolts I'm gonna run Edel rpm intake with Holley 750 I was shooting for 450-500 hp and also a any input on a good cam to go with this will be mostly street driven and little track and also has a 4 speed behind in thanks in advance sorry for how long this is haha

If the heads are what you say they are.... Yep Good Price.... Almost cant buy the rockers for that price. But you will still have to go threw them and get them checked and set up for what your going to run cam wise.
Scrap the RPM intake and go with the Victor.
Stuff a nice flat tappet solid or a roller set up... Depends on the budget..
It will haul the mail pretty good...

Yes I would go through them and why scrap the rpm why don't I want a dual plane for the low end or is the victor a dual plane to and should I port the head or do they flow good as they are

I would not dwell on the manifold as it is a component that could be changed easily at a later time. I would go with a roller cam for a serious mostly street cam for reliability, performance with high spring rates and no oil concerns as with a flat tappet.
The key issues I see are vehicle weight and gear ratio/tire size as it relates to end usage. I would strongly recommend using on line cam supplier forms from three companies to get good information to assist your decision.
I still may build a 408 truck engine but it will be far from yours which is getting closer to a race engine. This may be tough with a heavy vehicle, 10.5 compression and iron heads.

The increase in stroke will give you the bottom end and the increase in cubes will lower the operating rpm of the intake 500 rpm or more.

What year of block? An early LA roller cam install may still/will require oil gallery modification and the silicon bronze (maintenance item) drive gear for the oil pump drive? A big investment for a daily driver!

The block is 72 and how do you know if it. Needs that work done to it

It's still your choice. Even with a flat tappet cam, some oiling mods are in order if you really want to ZING it. You can google 340 oil mods and get all the information you may need.

I would think at this point. Ya just have to get it over to the machine shop and get it cleaned up... Sonic tested.... Checked for squareness and so on... Make sure you got something you can bore that will give the motor a good chance of living..
But them roller cams make good power...
