so i had a single 3" flowmaster installed no cat...this is in a 1990 dodge ramcharger 5.9 l 360. Im loving the sound but to hear it i have to gas it and the truck gets bad gas mileage. Anyways it was installed turned to the ground at a 45 on the side pretty much where the stock exhaust was. Im wanting it too be louder without changing the tone, can i cut the tailpipe off after the muffler right before rear wheel and dump it 45 or so?, will this make it louder and still sound nice and deep/throaty?

 

dumping it under the truck closer to the cab will eliminate pipe and make it sound better yes.

 

well it pretty much is dumped but there is 3 feet or so of pipe running to back, im wondering if i dump it right after the muffler? i guess im just disappointed...my dad has a 79 roadrunner 5.9 l true dual magnaflows dumped at the rear bumper (same as me minus the duals) and its louder...i cant understand why other than he has headers and other performance upgrades. I doubt duals are that much louder since there is two mufflers.

 

In order to get the sound that your after...you will need headers, dual exhaust and motor upgrades like your dads. There is and will be a big difference in sound as you have alresdy seen and heard.

 

Well i know duals sound different however i dont think they are that much louder. At any rate ive been thinking of running a striaght pipe but i think that would just be too loud....like i mean farmer loud making it sound like a tractor or dump truck. Long tube headers change the sund alot and make it louder, yes?

also dumping the flomaster after the muffler might make it sound louder but like crap, again with the tracter sound.

Its the facory y pipes that keep the sound from being louder i think, so if i can find a set of used long tubes for cheap i might buy them.

In the meantime im going to cut the muffler off my 79 roadrunner 360 with the single and see how it sounds....Im not driving it anyways as it is my newest project.

 

Do you still have the O2 sensors in place?

Alright so i took some pictures of what is clearly the tailpipe, I dont really like the way the tailpipe is running because of the bends and i would rather it be cut right after the axle when it comes down...However since this is an suv im worried about the exaust vapours. If i did cut it where it points down after the axle would it make a difference in sound?
