Hemi drop

I was thinking about doing a 5.7 or 6.1L hemi drop into my Dodge Dart. I was wondering If anyone knew a place where I could pickup a new gen hemi and transmission for a good price. And afterwards whats the easiest way to convert over to the new tech?

I'm sure it is possible. IT IS NOT going to be cheap!!! Maybe $15K + depending on what you pay for your Hemi

It's been done before. Just make sure you get the hemi computer and wiring harness also.

I plan on doing the work myself. Would it still be $15k for the parts if I am doing all the swapping and fabricating myself?

No, It will only cost as much as the donor car you need to purchase but there are some what ifs?

When you stay new tech do you mean injection?

And when you said new did you mean "brand new" as in crate motor?

No I plan on buying a gen 3 hemi donor car. Like a 300C, Charger or Challenger. Ripping its guts out and installing most of the car into my Dart. I am probably going 5.7 because the 6.1 cars are astronomical. Even a wrecked car with a 6.1 is 15-20 grand. I dont know the diff. is it like a 318 vs 340 or 340 vs 360. what I mean is it just a bore change and top end like in the 318 vs 340. Or is it a totally diff motor like 340 vs 360 diff bore, stroke, and top end. My goal is only around 500hp cus in a dart that weighs 2700lbs a 500hp motor will make it fly.

Other than dimensional differences like you stated there are some other differences. The 6.1 has forged internals and piston squirters and different exhaust ports so needs a different header. The 6.1 has a different head.

The 5.7 will support 500 hp. But has cast internals. Thats as much as I would throw at it with those internals ( but Im conservative). Plenty of folks have abused them and had no issues.

I haven't done a swap with it yet. The price point is still high to grab one just to put on a stand and play with.

Will you be using a carb or reusing the fuel injection?

I think $15,000 is ridiculous, take your time and keep an eye out-a 5.7 out of a pickup with a few extra goodies was on craigslist a few months ago and it actually came out of a dart I think 69', he was asking $2,800, also at the Jefferson swapmeet(large swap in Jefferson WI) I saw a 5.7 hemi in the crate used-cause it had been bought for a project but never fired-I stood and watched him get haggled down to $2,000 for it(did not have the computer or wiring harness but still a steal)-you can find these motors for reasonable prices just have to keep an eye out(just my 2 Cents)
Also a freind of mine did the 5.7 swap into a duster last year says hes got about $4,000 into it which really means he has around $5,000 in it, he changed cams and thats about it and its a screamer-and there are alot of different aftermarket suppliers who are carrying specific parts(headers, motor mounts ect.. for putting the fuel injected hemis in the older cars

This is a great thread

https://moparforums.com/forums/f9/so...-project-1602/

Depending on where you are located, I have a friend (in NH) that has a 5.7L (maybe even a 6.1L) and a 45RFE for sale.

I've done several of the swaps. You'll be cheaper with a complete donor vehicle. Car and truck Hemi's use different intakes, front covers, accessary mounts, oil pans, etc...
The easiest ones are '05 and down because of the PCI bus and no MDS. This are 345 HP engines. '06-'08 are CAN bus and MDS engines, but if your going that route, go for the '09-'11 VVT, MDS engine that makes 390HP. You'll need the throttle pedal (DBW), shifter assy, WIN module, wiring, etc..
I bought this truck:

an '11 with 12K on it for $4800. I have sold $3500 worth off parts I don't need off it to date.

This is going in my wife's '37 Plymouth truck. ABS, traction control, stability, etc... Everything can be made to work.

Cool. I think I would want a 6.1 then for the forged internals. I could always use a 5.7 And throw a forged 392 kit into it. If I buy one Im going FI not carb will need all wiring and computers. Im in MO Engine shipping from NH would be like 200-300. I also want a good tranny and have no idea about the ones that bolt up to the new gen hemis. What are my options. I know I could get AWD lol but besides that no idea. 300C Awd in my dart sounds cool but I dont have the skills for that swap. CJD thats the same thing I want to do. complete new tech in an old school package.

Like CJD said, I would find a donar vehicle then. Perferably a 2wd truck as that would give you everything that you need.
