New ignition system

Well it’s been a while but I’ve finally got the 440 back in the truck and running. I had to replace all the wiring due to it cracking and shorting out all over. While I was doing that I bought a Mallory 6al and unilite distributor. The distributor doesn’t have vacuum advance and I am wondering if anyone knows about where the timing should be? I haven’t really had time to play with it but so far I have it set at 14 deg initial and it seems to be running pretty good. Is there anything I should watch out for with this set up? The motor is bored .030 and I’m running CNC ported 516 heads with a 232/245 518 lift cam.

Of all the 440s I've had with iron heads I haven't seen one that didn't want 38 degrees total. That said initial timing could be a little more maybe 16 degrees with the total all in by 2500 rpm. I would try a little more timing a/ idle and limit it to 38 total, you can always go back to 14.
Good luck
Tom

Thanks for the info Tom, I’ll play with it a little more next week. I’m hoping to be driving it around before the snow falls here in Utah.

Right now it has a 3.23 open rear end and I'm not sure what converter it has but I have a 3.54 sure grip that I am in the middle of rebuilding for it.

Get the right converter in it and it should be a ripper, haven't seen any pictures in a while how about putting a few up for us?
Thanks Tom

I want to do something else with the wheels and tires but I’m still not sure what I want to do.

This is when I just dropped it in
