Dwell Angle was what it got change to later in life....

 

i spent tons of time setting early late 60 duel point dist. i could mount set install and timing set my 1965 300 L points in 15 min. i would set the points with a feeler gauge. and the dwell would be right on 42 degrees. with out a meter. but i have a couple of tricks.

Never used a feeler after the first few times

Just "rough in" by eye, cardboard between one set, set with dwell "on the starter."

Swap the cardboard into the first set of points, crank and set the second, then start 'er up and make sure dwell is OK running.

This of course was easier on an RB with dist up front but it didn't take much longer on a 340

I don't think I spent 5 minutes setting dwell on my 440

Ferds 'n Mopars are easy because of the access to the starter relay. GM you could set stockers running because of the "window" If GM had dual points AND the right dist cap it had TWO windows



What I used to hate working on was the "weird ones" like Mallory Rev Pol or that G$%#@ Da#@ "Ducoil" which fortunately I only ran into about 3 times. Those worked like two separate 4 cylinder engines, two coils one points for each coil, traveling separate paths with a special rotor and cap. The thing is, that changing dwell on one or other sets of points CHANGED THE TIMING on the "other" 4 cylinders!!!

 

Dammmmmm 440roadrunner had game back in the day also......
No wonder Mopar Won Daytona Beach..And Stock Car...And Super Stock..

And on that note...Who would have thought back then we would be adjusting timing with computers and variable cam timing. Wow... My how times have changed !!!!

 

i had a Mallory Rev Pol system. the BAD thing was the points would slip, and you had 4 of the cyl firing at a diff abount. the coil that came with it was very powerfull. i kept it and tossed the Mallory Rev Pol part.
