426 HEMI fitments.

I just had a hypothetical question. Would a newer 6.4L (426) Hemi, from a 2008 Challenger for example, fit a 70's Mopar muscle car that previously had a Big block in it? Are they similar in sizes? Are the engine mounts the same? Just curios, and I haven't been able to find anything with google.

I wonder if they modified the engine mounts though. I'm curios if you can simply, as simple as changing engines can be, drop one in?

nothing is the same , the first thing is a 6.4 is 392 Ci , the new hemis are based on Small blocks so notonly do they have no interchangable parts but even the trans will not bolt up . Schumaker may have conversion mounts , I believe they do ,some have swapped out the K frame to go to an Alter K Tion to bolt the new Hemis in , TTi has headers , you will have to deal with computer & fuel issues , the engines will not run without a computer & you either have to adapt a high pressure fuel system or replace the EFI with a different intake & a carb which is a big step backwards . New Hemis do not have colling fans on the engine so you need a killer electric fan system , lots to sort out .

Alright, thank you! I knew that I wouldn't do it easily, just thought it would be cool.

There are tons of guys doing it, here's a quick article:

I believe A+B body forums have their own section devoted to this. Lots of info on this to DIY or store bought conversions

Welcome!

THis has been a popular swap for a few years now.... Heck even one of our own members here swapped in a well built HEMI motor into his dart. Look up Crazy4carz. I'll see if I can find his thread.

It may or may not be "popular." It is being done but it is NOT an inexpensive swap. It depends on "what" hemi you get, as the car and truck hemis have several important differences. Issues like alternator mount, exhaust headers (expensive), oil pan (expensive), and adapting the EFI (newer rigs have security issues, etc) are all problems to be solved.

So far as an automatic, you CAN adapt an earlier small block torqueflite, but you must adapt for the rear mount crank trigger, and the flex plate is different.

I'm not trying to discourage you at all, but this is NOT a "bolt in" deal.
