Oil problems with all OHV engines
#124
Why can't this just be sticky'd? But anyway about this zinc thing so there is no motor oil you can simply buy at a store that has it? Any additives in particular available at store that has it to add to the oil because I think I'm going to be changing the oil on a 70's 360 and might as well do it right. Is there a particular oil brand that is good too? Synthetic or regular?

I just had a engine built and the builder told me to use the Lucas Oils engine break in lube with every oil change. Oreillys carries is in quarts and I just use it with every oil change. I found it to be more reasonably priced than the Royal Purple oil.

In Auto Zone today and found this: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/gener...tentId=7032644
Is that a good oil wieght to put in your car? Really expensive, almost as much as Royal Purple so probably wont be getting anyway. Just letting you know.

that weight is ok
but, if it is synthetic, unless your motor is sealed up tight, any leak that you have now will be look magnified if you put synthetic oil in

I have been talking to several camshaft companies about this and they all agree that the only time the zinc is needed is at camshaft break in. Of course, it does not hurt a thing to run oil with zinc for the life of the engine, but it may be an unnecessary expense.

Since these cars only require one to two oil changes per year, adding the zinc for extra security is the safe route.

Not trying to advertise for this outfit, but it explains the problem well including the counter argument. It's worth a look.

I agree with the article. The counter arguement of an engine that has been in use for a long time will need less zinc may be true, but for an extra $10, I'd feel a lot safer if I always used the additive.

its true no zinc faster wear comp cams has oil with zinc or use a break in additive like lucas and there is a off brand name oil i cant think of the name but its sold at wallmart the machine shop that did my motor recommended this brand oil because it contains zinc i ran it during the break-in period but went back too Valvoline 20/50 zr racing now i put the zinc additive in with my oil change i had no ideal they removed the zinc and all the warnings that came with my comp cams about this educated me and saved me a lot of money i trust Valvoline ran that oil for ever in all my vehicles and the tear down of my last souped 318 proved to me of the protection and cleanliness of the parts wow

also for a quick note castrol gtx is junk in my experience i tried it for a year in my work van and i would notice oil pressure drops when that oil would get hot more than way more than Valvoline if i would park the van for about an hour say to get lunch then back to the job sight the oil pressure would be higher i didn't like this variable i never ran this oil in my high horse power motors probably a good thing
