tranny trouble

had a slght leak and on my way to the shop it stared smoking bad and went out, it won't shift into drive for a few seconds then goes out right away, it has a reverse manual valve body and a b&m quick sliver shifter it was raced and i'm going to convert it back to a fully auto its headed for the tranny specialist to have the work done, bt i'm wondeing if i'll have to change shifters or can this one work? i'm hoping the problem is the valve body which i'm changing anyhow, anybody know what my problem could be?

If it was raced, takes a few seconds before drive kicks in it sounds like the tranny is in need of a full rebuild. You will have to swap shifters if you go to a normal shift valve body.

it shifts into drive but doesn't stay in long and goes back out, i only put 10 miles on the car since i bought it guess thats why i got so cheap huh, it also has 456 rears that gotta go other than that everything seems fine it looks like new inside and out, it came off the ground a few feet when i drove it the first time and knocked a hole in the oilpan which ended up being bad schocks i replaced them with eldecbock shocks and solved that problem, gonna change the rears to 370's i think whats your opinion? i wanna just go to shows and cruises etc but might want to race it once in awhile, thanks for your input though, oh i forgot to mention it's a 68 roadrunner

What do you have for a shifter? Some of the B&M (example) ratchet shifters work "either way" for a reverse or conventional valve body, because the ratchet works either way. But the B&M "pro stick" will have to have a different detent plate installed, which you can order.

So far as the transmission, no idea. Depending on who made the valve body, I might be interested. PM me when/ if you decide.

I don't think you have to change out the shifter. I have a regular shifter in mine with a reverse manual valve body. I just have to remember the shift pattern. I would go with 355 gears to make it more streetable.

A set of 3.55 or 3.73 gears would be much better. Maybe a wheelie bar too

First ? Check the fluid level. Converting Just swap the valve body is the main change. Don't try to undo the mods just swap it. There may be other mods ? depends on who built it . Also for street you may need to change the tq converter
depending on stall speed

By the way the kick down linkage is probably missing So check with Boulcher ? Performance for a kick down cable kit or Lockar VERY IMPORTANT no kickdown is the quickest way to destroy the trans

get to drive my car yet but did notice all the linkage is missing to change it back to fully automatic and said they don't make aftermarket linkage thats hes aware of and I might spend alot of time to find it I might be better of leaving it as however i'm hoping this linkage you showed me is whats he talking about, I'll tell him Monday after he drives the car and knows whats wrong with it I might be able to switch it back after all
