oil dipstick no reading

oil dipstick no reading

i have a oil dipstick showing just a bit of oil on the end
i just replaced the oil pan seal and the seal needed for the windage plate
same seal.

i put 5 quarts in i dont have what i believe is the 7 inch
i have the other i believe is a 5

is the another available

does anyone know the lenght of a oil stick for a 5 inch pan

should the stick go in till it hits the bottom
than work my way up in some way

now for the dumb question

i put oil in the big hole on my valve cover ....just checking

its a new vehicle me


440 engine i think early 76

I believe that you need to add some more oil, maybe half a quart or so. If you have run the motor since filling it, the oil filter will hold .5qt itself.

Add 1/2 qt and re-check till it shows. It's like5 1/2 or 6qts for a 440 i believe. Mine takes almost 8 qts.

Agree..... Add a half a quart and then re-check.. May need the other for the filter....

i didnt want to overdo it.

what are the symptoms of having too much?

The oil will foam from the crank whipping it

I wanted to touch base.

Adding another 3/4 of a quart did the trick.

when i did the change i also replaced the pan gasket. When i did this i let it sit for a few days, I wanted to give the pan a new paint job.
Im thinking every last drop of oil could of dripped out causing it to need a bit more.
