Timing light

I can't get a flash when trying to time my car. I have a 1973 360 with mopar electronic ignition. I've tried 2 different lights.....one won't flash at all, and one will flash once when I initially pull the trigger, and then won't flash again unless I wait a few seconds and pull it again, and it will flash only once. I know both of these lights work because I had a friend take them home and try them on his vehicle. I had the car into the garage for a new steering box and they put a light on it to check the timing and couldn't get a flash either. I have 8.5MM wires and was thinking maybe they are too thick to pick up the signal, but have had guys tell me they don't have any problems with thick wires. Any ideas?...I'm stumped.

Don......no....

Make SURE that you have the clips correctly hooked to the battery and a good connection

Try turning the pickup "over" so it faces the other way.

Try moving the pickup up/ down the length of the plug wire

Try putting the pickup on the coil wire and see if you get anything there

If none of this works, and the lights work on other vehicles, it surely must be some glitch with the plug wires.

I was just about to junk mine. When I went to remove the battery clamps from the wire to salvage them, I found the wire had broken where it connects to the clamp. I'm not sure if they all do but mine will make a noise when I squeeze the trigger when its hooked the battery.
Be sure to check orientation of the pick-up clamp on the plug wire. I have hooked mine ***-backward more than a few times.

No broken wires. like I stated, I had my buddy take it home and try it on his Camaro and he said it worked great. I will try it again and check orientation.

I've done some more research and have found quite a few people having this same issue with no resolve. Many of the same suggested remedies were tried with no resolve. I will try these things tonight (if I get time) and let you know what I find. Thanks.

Occasionally I have issues with mine I have real thick Accel wires with ceramic boots, melting issues. I found that there are better spots, sweets spots, if you move it around on the wire, loose on the wire was no good. May also have to hold the wire pressing into the clamp.

Tried pressing on the clamp while it was on the wire....didn't work. I'll give all of these suggestions a shot when I can get a minute....swamped right now but hopefully by the weekend I'll get some time to tinker with it.

o -

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you tried calling the companies that made A. the timing light AND B. the company that made the wires? There might be a know incompatibility between them, too much insulation, etc.

Bought the skinny wire but got sidetracked replacing the water pump and Radiator. I will follow up once I get things in order.

Yep, I had the same problem. I guess yours is something more serious? In that case I really don't have answers, lol.
