what rear end gears to use with a 727?
what rear end gears to use with a 727?
Me and my G-Pa just got done rebuilding the engine in our '74 charger. 318 30'd over with a edelbrock 600 cfm and cam (not sure on the cam specs, was never told what they were by the people who built it
) we also rebuilt the 727 and threw a shift kit in it, original torque converter. The car however, is still doing a 0-60 slower than a prius (9 sec.). Is this more likely to be short rear end gears or timing? wouldnt mind replacing the gears anyway because it still dont have a locking diff

3.23 is a great street gear, I wouldn't go more than 3.55.
Getting a timing light on it to determine initial, total and at what rpm is key to getting the best performance, not knowing could hurt.

bjm -
Yup.
Only thing you would have to consider is what you want to do with the car.
If stop light to stop light is your thing, you can certainly go with higher numbers. (Remember, it's a 4K pound car...)
If you plan on driving it on the highway, the definitely want something in the 3.23 - 3.55 range.
BTW - before I dropped in the 440, my 74 Charger had a moderately modified 318, the 3.23s really were the right gears (still are).

I don't know what you EXPECT
A charger is a fairly heavy car
Using the stock converter and an unknown bigger cam might be 90% of the problem
And, we don't have any idea what you've done to optimize carb and timing, IE tuning
I found one website that showed a stock 318 73 Dart Sport at 8.8, so "whaddaya 'spect" in a car that weighs at least another 600 lbs or so
Also, what intake are you using? Exhaust? There are so many variables here it's just incredible.

I wouldn't call it a daily driver but I do want it to be Highway drivable. Running a 360 intake, stock headers, and true dual exhaust with race mufflers. I don't expect unholy 0-60 times, but just enough to make it a more fun car to drive (fun for me being the car just about scaring the daylight outta me to goose it). I was considering a gear vendors unit in the future along with a cam I know the specs of also. As far as carb tuning I'm in Wyoming elev. 4500 ft. And running whatever edelbrock specs for that altitude is (they have a setup for exactly 4500 ft.)
IF you have the ingredient's....

If more on the stock side.....

Just my 2 cents...
