Please explain to me granny gear

Hi newbie here from New Zealand. I've bought an untouched 85 D150 318 4sp with granny gear in Vegas. What is the granny gear, is it a very low 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. Any idea what the rear gearing might be for this.
Cheers

"Granny gear" is just a very low speed/high power first gear. A stump puller so to speak. The rest, 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears are about what a regular 3 speed manual transmission would be like. Don't take this as EXACTLY what the gear ratios are it's just what a "born in the 50's" live through the times of trucks with manual transmissions guy has seen called "granny gear". A lot of people I've known and my self as well would most of the time on just regular street and highway use would start off in 2nd gear on a level, paved street just because 1st would feel like it barely got you even moving, thus "granny gear".

I guess everyone can make wise cracks after Jack Ryan gave the perfect answer. I was going to say any gear when my wife is driving (new Gramma).

Welcome from north Iowa, I'm glad to see you can tolerate a little fun, the granny gear was popular and necessary when pickups had low horse power and torque ratings.
good luck with your new project pictures would be nice.

Many times back in the early 1900's the truck was often also the tractor. I'm talking 1930's and before, and more than one truck was turned in to a tractor by setting up one transmission to power a seconded transmission giving you tractor speed options and pulling power.

Old time ingenuity. When making do was just SOP.
