It's in.

Lets see what it dose.....
All the other guys are spot on with their info... But will get to that point in just a bit.
But lets see if we can get where we can read the timing first..
I'm just looking for a specific answer back....
Al.... Merry Christmas to Y'all also.... Thank You...

It's out?

Timing
No. , it's before lol. Started yesterday with the new gun & tried setting to 14 at idle around 900 rpm. It's moving / not steady to the point it's hard to tell what's it's on. But it's close to 14. Starts and runs easy and is better but when I tried going up it starts running rough higher you go rougher it seems to get. May be all from battery that says charged but I suspect is bad. It's old anyways and am needing a new utility battery. Getting a new battery today and try again. Shouldn't it settle down when trying to set ?

Not enough volts will do things to the ignition for sure as the rpm goes up. Should have had you check volts at coil with it running, I chased that for a week or three one time.

Do you have an alternator on the car or do you charge between rounds? A bad or weak battery could make all the difference.

Are good buddy Chad Reynolds has a good video for you too look at for some understanding....
Chad only lives about a 20 drive from me... Great guy... See him often..(Mr. BangShift).
Ultimately>>>>>
Total: between 32-38* of timing @ a RPM range 0f 2500 RPM is what we are looking for.
Soooo... Let just look at the numbers that you gave us.....
Idle: 14*
3000 rpm: 30*
Total: 16* Advance timing.
This would be not enough for total timing...

The reason I quit at 3000 is it seemed to bottom out around there and the 30 was staying pretty constant. That's what is messing with me , not sure what's in dizzy so you add that say 14 to as the example 30 is 44. So For an example if you have 10 int. And you want 36 would you look for 26 on balancer or 36? I thought you had to add them. So it's going to show on the balancer a number minus the int. Timing.

yes.....
Just a foot note..... You can do what you stated above.... set it at 36*@ 2500rpm.... And what ever it is when it drops to idle is what it is....
As long as its not hard to start.. your ok for a base line at the moment...
You can adjust later if you feel it needs more timing or if you hear it Knock with detonation at all you can back the time out....

It might be time to back up and find TDC in the hole on #1, on the damper and the distributor, verify a full 12 volts and ground at the box and 12 volts coil verify all wiring at the box to and from, verify all grounds and last thing borrow a box from someone and see if that takes care of it.
It just might be one you fix thru process of elimination.

Dist. is only adding 14*....
Let not get to far away from trying to fix the problem at the moment.
This is not pulling far enough to cause the problem that I was looking for.
I first thought that maybe the dist. was advancing somewhere in the 50's or 60* range causing the missing issue from the original post. That does not appear to be the case at this point.
Iowan, has kindly taking us into the next phase of coping with the issue at hand that might be a voltage problem that needs to be addressed.

It's just never sounded like " timing " to me.

The big variable is it was his dad's car, dad knew everything about it now he's got a sharp learning curve, so it could be one simple overlooked connection or switch on.

Timing
I wouldn't say I'm at the beginning of the big curve lol but I admit I am only in the starting stages on this timing deal. I have yet heard some answers to some of the questions I posted above. Like what I was asking about int advance being either added to arrive at total. If so how come you don't add it when your looking for a number on the balancer.

Sorry I see where I added the confusion..My Bad.. the total would have read, you are only getting 16* out of the Dist. and you need 36* for a total. so you would need 22* in the Dist. to advance it far enough to make it to 36* total.
