No...Just saying.... Go with what the builder suggestion is... Then if you find out that that high of octain is not needed you can lower it later... But better safe than sorry....

So I can order the advance adjustment kit with springs etc and go with lowering my initial or we can lock it out then see how it does as far as starting may need the starter saver retard. Guess we would just have to try and start to find out. Or could go ahead and purchase the retard and install before starting. Then maybe a crank trigger later. Anyways leaning toward locking it out. How do you set the timing if locked out for the first time?
I would just pull it apart and give it a good cleaning and see it you could save it...

May go ahead and order a new pick up its pretty cheap. I have a new button and cap along with wires. Older coil so may get one of those also. Then make a decision. Thanks

Not real familiar with fuel but using a higher octain shouldn't hurt anything but not enough will. Is that correct? Thanks

Sort of.... If you go too high on the octane it will not burn in the chamber properly..

Lol

I going to ignore. The internet is not my way of doing things that need the personal touch. Ok Bob I have the distributor locked out now how do I set the timing to 36 degrees? Then later get the crank trigger. That'll be fun hu?

LOL... Start the motor.. warm it up... put your timing light on it... Restart the car... Rev the rpms above 1000 rpm just to set the retard in the msd box, if it has one. set the timing to 36* and lock the dist. down. and your done.

Look... Look.. You got Iowan all worked up.... lol

If you have the timing locked you can start it set the timing and check it at deferent rpm to make sure it doesn't change and how it runs. Then shut it off and see if it will start, turn over with all the advance.

Ok then later just set as usual. So Munda good men I'll try to do this tomorrow hopefully. The crank t. Seems the way to go for the best stability and I may end up that way plus may have to have starter saver. Can't do that right now so I'll just try the lockout. Saw a video on msd site somewhere showed how to lock out pro billet dist. Without welding. Just have to remove everything weight and springs etc.. then knock out pin and pull shaft up enough to rotate the plate on top 180 put nut back on you guys familiar with that? Thanks

Hello gang. I took dist. apart to lock out , took pin out pulled up on shaft whola took nut loose on bottom and noticed something wedged between pick up and reluctor and dam if it wasn't an large original bushing someone dropped and left down in there. All these years 20 plus. Removed and put it back together hopefully when I fire it up things will be different. Thanks

Final post on this timing issue. Thanks to those who helped. The old bushing was reeking havic on my ignition laying in there all this time. Gremlins I guess. After locking out setting to 36 it runs fabulous. Starts easy. But it took all these steps to find the bushing Cramed in there. Now it's ready for alignment shop then the track. Timing has settled down no more rough running , revs and responds as it should. Skynyrd

Just asking about the cam your using, lift and duration @.050 roller or flat tappet, I'm curious what others are using and why. My combination is old I built it in 91 it still has a flat tappet Comp 274 282 @ .050 and .590 .609 cam in it, the smallest one I had on the shelf the last time it went back together.

The old 500" made 600ft of tq at 3000 rpm , unbelievable so I'm wondering what you have in yours.

Thanks for the help, Iowan

Charlie and I chatted not To long ago... I know he was fighting some chassis issues. Made a gear change in the car. But I'm hoping he gets an E-Mail about the post and pops in for an update...
